A Vulture Colony in Tripura soon
In an effort to conserve environment, the forest department of Tripura government is planning to set up a vulture colony at Khowai district. The endangered bird was recently sighted at this district.
The vulture colony will be provided with abundant food options and a suitable ecosystem. The scavenger bird is facing huge threat of extinction due to diclofenac poisoning, unavailability of food, and deforestation.
“Twenty six vultures were spotted at Kalyanpur area along the river bank and more than 10 at Chebri area. We are planning to build a restaurant for vultures in Kalyanpur and Chebri so that these birds do not run out of food. We would supply carcasses of animals at their resting and roosting places,” said Niraj Kumar Chanchal, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Khowai.
According to a survey, vultures were also sighted in South Tripura and Sipahijala.
Among the nine species of the birds sighted in the country, white-rumped vulture found in Tripura has been identified as critically endangered.
