Manipur to have Khelo India Centres with one sports discipline each in 16 districts
The Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal was chosen as the Khelo India State Centre of Excellence (KISCE) and was virtually inaugurated by Hon’ble Kiren Rijiju, the Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs in 2020.

As per Ministry's letter No. 02/KI/SLKIC/Operational Guidelines/2020-21 dated 29.06.2020 regarding the "opening of Khelo India Centres in your state Under Khelo India scheme", the Department of YAS, Govt. of Manipur had issued a letter addressed to all the Deputy Commissioner, Manipur vide official letter no. 5/3/DKIC/2020-YAS dated 29th August, 2020 inviting application form from past champion athlete and organization in prescribed sports discipline of Khelo India for 02-03 proposals of each District.
In this regard, Deputy Commissioner of Kakching forwarded their recommendation in the 03 (three) sports disciplines of 'Table Tennis', 'Thang-Ta' and 'Football' addressed to the Director, SAI, NERC, Imphal on 5th October, 2020 for further submission to the Ministry. Similar recommendations were submitted by the concerned authorities from each of the 16 districts with their proposed disciplines for the Khelo India Centres which were to be executed through past champions athletes and private academies and had nothing to do with the Government departments.
While the above selection of the centres that were to be executed through past champions athletes and private academies was in the process, another letter from the Ministry was sent to the Directorate of Youth Affairs And Sports for the submission of district level Khelo India Centres (KIC) for Government organizations requesting identification of one discipline each for 16 districts basis the ready-to-use infrastructure availability, performance of the state in a particular discipline and the popularity of the sports discipline. The Sports Ministry had therefore instructed and approved the Directorate of Youth Affairs And Sports to start the process of setting up the centres in the districts.
Based on the recommendations and the guidelines by the Ministry, the sports disciplines for each of the 16 districts were approved for KICs. In regards to Kakching, since the district has produced some of the top Badminton players who have represented the state and the country and considering the popularity of the discipline as well as the performance of the Badminton players from the district in the national arena, opening of Badminton Centre under Khelo India as part of the 16 centres across 16 districts of Manipur was approved.
As part of the Ministry's vision to set up 1000 new Khelo India Centres in all states and UTs, with at least one KIC in each district of the country, Manipur received the approval of 16 centres in the 16 districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Kakching, Chandel, Tengnoupal, Bishnupur, Churchandpur, Pherzwal, Kangpokpi, Senapati, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Jiribam, Tamenglong and Noney. These KICs will be set up across the 16 districts of Manipur in partnership with the Sports Ministry to provide grassroot-level sports infrastructure and groom young athletes from the state.
